Solar Freeze is looking for partnerships to upscale smallholder farmer solutions
In much of the developing world, postharvest losses are as high as 80%. Solar Freeze offers concrete solutions for smallholder farmers in Kenya and is looking for partnerships to upscale and provide long term affordable solutions.
In much of the developing world, postharvest losses are as high as 80% and the cold‐storage chain is virtually nonexistent due to the high cost of equipment and spotty electricity. Because fresh produce can perish in a matter of days under ambient temperatures, temperature control alone can extend the shelf life by weeks or even months.
Quickly lowering produce temperature after harvest extends shelf life by reducing metabolic activity and microbial growth.
Market prices rise and fall drastically. Farmers who can store produce longer can take advantage of better prices.
About Solar Freeze
We are pioneering mobile cold storage units powered by renewable energy for rural smallholder farmers, to help them reduce the huge challenge of post-harvest loss in much of the developing world, postharvest losses are as high as 80% and the cold-storage chain is virtually non-existent due to the high cost of equipment and spotty electricity.
We use an integrated approach to increase smallholder farmers output. Recognizing that it is a systems-based challenge and requires an integrated innovation strategy that incorporates technological and financial innovations, capacity building across the value chain, enhanced market access and other elements to achieve impact at scale.
A one stop turnkey portable off-grid toolkit for localized food production containing a complete ecosystem of smart farm technologies to enhance agricultural productivity, from 4kWp solar power and micro-drip irrigation, to solar powered cold storage and IoT Smartfarm Kit with Wi-Fi connectivity to increase smallholder farmers productivity by 200 percent and reduce water waste by 90 percent. The portable unit comes equipped with all of the core components needed to start and maintain a 1-acre farm ideal for African smallholder farmers. Designed as the “Swiss-Army knife” of farming, this mobile infrastructure contains;
- 4kWp Solar Power - the portable solar powered unit generates clean energy to power itself
- Micro-drip irrigation - a portable, internet connected solar powered irrigation system. At its maximum capacity (head of 100 meters) it is the cheapest solar powered irrigation unit on the continent. In addition to the irrigation kit’s performance, we’ve also introduced a financing platform, Pay-As-You-Grow, making the irrigation accessible to the mass market. Coupling the irrigation’s technology and our Pay-As-You-Grow platform, we have the ability to graduate farmers up our product ladder. Our drip and mist irrigation systems are made in an easy to use plug and play style and can lead to yield increase of up to 200%.
- Solar Powered Cold Storage- a “plug and play” modular, solar-powered cold storage unit powered by solar energy for rural smallholder farmers, to help them reduce the huge challenge of post-harvest loss by as much as 90 percent.
- IoT Smartfarm Kit - by using electronic sensors to collect soil data like moisture, nutrients, pH etc and send them to a cloud server via GSM, satellite and Wifi. Algorithms in the server analyze the data and advice farmers on farming techniques, fertilizer use, water use and best harvest time to reduce food loss and food waste via basic and easy to understand SMS and Voice Messages in farmers’ own local vernacular language.The data generated is aggregated, annonymized and subscribed for agro-lending, agro-insurance, commodity trading to banks, insurers and investors.
How can access to renewable energy equipment specifically cold storage be made more accessible to smallholder farmers in East Africa?
Our solutions uniqueness is adopting a micro franchise model concept and integrating this model with village youth and women agents in transforming rural agriculture and farmers to increase their agribusiness efficiency. This model and approach enables rural prosperity through productive equipment access,through the use of the sharing economy.
Achieving our ambitions
We are currently working with The University of California, Davis, The USAID and Engineering Symposium for Africa. In order to upscale and provide more service to a lower cost we are actively looking for new partnerships. We are inviting quality manufacturers for the innovation so that the price can be more affordable to get in touch with us.
