Why are so many products made of plastics, when there is a solution provided by nature? Krown-design makes products for interiors, the building & construction industry, and packaging. Examples are lamps, chairs, wall panels, bricks, insulation boards, or cool boxes or containers.
Krown-Design was has licensed the technology that was developed by Ecovative design in the US. In our factory, we grow products instead of manufacturing them. Many different designs have already been realized into real products. Krown-Design wants to create a production unit where products of any shape or size can be made with Mycelium and biomass.
Mycelium as living glue
Mycelium is part of a fungus and binds biomass together as a natural glue. In a mould, any product shape and size can be 'grown'. The process takes approximately 5 days, after which the wet product is taken out of its mould to be dried in an oven for a few hours. This will kill the fungus and dehydrate the product to become a strong and hard shape.
Products made with Mycelium can be a suitable alternative to Expanded Polystyrene (EPS), or other plastics. Our products are shock-proof, insulating, fire retardant and light. This makes them perfect for the industries mentioned above. Mycelium is a network of ‘fungal wires’ living underground. In a forest environment, these fungal wires can produce mushrooms. But in our factory we only need the binding function of the mycelium, so stop the growth before mushrooms can fruit. We do this by heating it in an oven. This means that the product is inert, which, in more popular terms, means it is not living anymore.
Mycelium products are completely biodegradable. In fact, they form a healthy compost for a garden: when broken into small pieces, the parts will biodegrade within several months.
