ECOR and Avery Dennison develop panels made from liner waste

What to with waste resulting from the liner of stickers and tags? Avery Dennison, global manufacturer and distributor of adhesive materials, found itself facing that question. The solution was found in a partnership with NOBLE Environmental Technologies. We developed circular ECOR panels, therefore upcycling the liner waste using water, air and pressure.

The collected label liner waste was combined with recycled paper and cardboard to form a new ECOR alloy. This newly created building material, was presented at industry-leading trade show Labelexpo 2017 in Brussels, themed `Pioneering Change`. About 60% of the structural elements of Avery Dennison’s booth have been built using ECOR panels, such as the partition walls, meeting rooms, storage and technical areas plus an activation zone called “Change the Future.” By displaying so visibly what can be made of residual flows, Avery Dennison wants to inform customers and employees how it addresses the issue of liner waste in the industry. The use of ECOR panels thus provides a platform to learn about creating sustainable markets and use of residual flows.

Partnerships for circular products

In order to create ECOR, NOBLE Environmental Technologies has developed a technique to make panels from water, pressure, heat and different types of 100% recycled cellulose fibres. We collect the cellulose from urban, farm and forest ‘waste’ (residual flows), such as old textiles or used paper. The ECOR panels are fully reusable and designed to have a long useful life, which means that it can be used again for future events, or re-converted into pulp for future ECOR materials. The panels are great examples of the circular economy, as they are fully recyclable and made from flows that otherwise would not be used. We do not add other resources either: all we need is cellulose fibre, water, air and pressure.

Potential for residual flows

We want to make our impact on the circular economy as large as possible and therefore, we often collaborate with leading manufacturers and large enterprises to design products together. We choose the cellulose materials depending on who we work with, whereby we aim to use resources that are otherwise wasted. Our partnership with Avery Dennison is a great example of this.
