Hindustan Zinc looking for sustainable business solutions through Net Zero Strategies

Conserving natural resources, reducing dependency on fresh water, reducing energy use, and eliminating solid waste can improve the environment, save money, and help communities become more sustainable and resilient. Hindustan Zinc is looking for experts for developing and implementing Net Zero strategies (zero emissions), approaches, and technologies.

Globally, Hindustan Zinc (HZL) is one of the largest integrated producers of zinc-lead with a capacity of 1.0 million MT per annum and a leading producer of silver. Hindustan Zinc is a subsidiary of Vedanta Resources plc, a global diversified natural resources company.

The Company is self-sufficient in power with an installed base of 474 MW coal-based captive power plants. Additionally, it has a green power capacity of 324 MW including 274 MW of wind power, 16 MW of solar power and 35 MW of waste heat power. Over our 25 years of existence, we have received many awards and accolades for environment conservation initiatives taken at operations units. Hindustan Zinc has ranked 1st in the environment category and overall 5th in the Metals & Mining sector by the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World).

Lead-zinc mining in India

HZL is the sole integrated zinc producer in the country and dominates the zinc smelting industry representing more than 96% of total domestic output. Zinc and Lead production in the country will grow at a robust 6.8% each year, between 2016 and 2020. Because of this, HZL is rapidly expanding their production capacity. This expansion will lead to more stress on water and energy resources, increase in solid waste generation and we need to look forward to eco-friendly technologies and develop long-term Net Zero Strategies to have minimum impact on the environment.

HZL’s current approach

We are currently working on the expansion of our green power portfolio, technological intervention in mining methodology and waste minimisation through best-in-class Fumer technology. Fumer technology will be used in the near future and will eliminate the hazardous waste (‘jarosite’) that is generated when extracting zinc. Next to this, we also have a research & development program for recycling and reuse of waste and we have a Public-Private partnership to treat Udaipur City’s sewage and using the treated water in our operation.
