Promise Bags' eco-friendly leather and jute bags

Giving holistic freedom to women that are trapped in caste-based discrimination. That is Promise Bags’ dream. Providing Dalit women (Untouchables) with a job has the unique power of empowerment and dignity. At Promise Bags, we produce hand-made leather and jute bags of quality.

About Promise Bags

Employment is a tool for freedom. Promise Bags does not only provide women with a livelihood, but empowers them by providing employment in a safe, loving and caring environment. Our mission is to offer freedom to Dalit women who are trapped in a 3,000-year-old caste-system that brutalized, discriminated, deliberately put down and treated less than an animal. Incepted on 9th January 2015 with 6 women, right now we have employed 12 women, making 2,500 handbags a month. Our dream is to employ 100 women by 2025.

13 years ago, we started a non-profit organization called Children Home and English Medium School for Dalit children. 40% Of your profits go to this organization. Every bag is handmade with pride. We produce eco-friendly vegetable tanned leather bags and jute bags. We make handbags, wallets, belts and handwoven leather bags.

Dalits in India

Dalits also called the “Untouchables,” “Outcastes,” and most recently “slumdogs,” are still in a rather hopeless situation in India. They are subjected to rape, harassment, violence and are underprivileged. Dalits need to receive all the educational, economic and social justice benefits, just like the rest of Indian society.

South-Indian leather

Promise Bags takes pride in using East India leather (E.I.), first discovered and popularized by the British East India Company in the early 1800s to cater to the British Army. The leather made in South-India using the traditional method of vegetable tanning was celebrated as one of the highest quality leathers around the world, for over two centuries. The E.I. leather production declined when chemically tanned leathers replaced it for their cost-effectiveness and ease of tanning. E.I. Leather received Intellectual Property Rights Protection or Geographical Indication (GI) status in 2008, thereby giving it international recognition.

Vegetable tanning: Eco-friendly and unique

Vegetable tanned leather refers to the tannage or method of tanning the cowhide into leather. It's called “vegetable” because of the natural materials used in the tanning process like tree bark, branches

and leaves. The actual tanning process takes between one and three months. Since vegetable tanning is a natural process, it's also eco-friendly. Vegetable tanned leather goods are truly unique and have a bold characteristic, especially when they aged naturally by frequent usage. They have a distinctive scent, true charism, and will bring pride to the owner/user.

Jute bags

We also manufacture jute bags. Jute is often called “The Golden Fibre.” Derived from a plant, it is biodegradable and does not pollute the environment. Jute is eco-friendly, durable and strong fiber which is popular in the world market for shopping bags, packaging and fashion accessories.
